Third rock from the Sun

Surprises are always around the corner for us, not necessarily pleasant ones. Things change and so do circumstances and so do people. There are some times when you are so happy that world seems to be a smaller place, every person around the corner and across the street smiles at you, also there are times when you are so unhappy that world seems to be just a lifeless stone, just a 'third rock from the Sun', everyone seems to be angry at you and it feels like sky is collapsing on you. Just one of those times when you wish you had power to be invisible, just gone, disappear into the thin air, away from this material world.

But alas ! this ain't any fairy tale, its a real world and we have to play by the rules. Sometimes I look in the mirror and can't tell who I really am and who everyone else believes me to be. its like walking a thin line between 'what is' and 'what could be'. Confused perplexed yet struggling to convenience myself I am alright. When will we stop running, running from the truth. Stop pretending to be what we are not. I always hated hypocrites, but then I found myself doing the same, shocking but true. Worst part is when you realize it, its like waking up from a nightmare and finding out you are in a much worst situation ! be as it may.

Its like life takes you up on a ladder, up and up then suddenly you realize that there is nothing there for you and now its a long way down. All you got was castles of sand, throne of twigs, and your crown of ice was melting. Guess what its times for us to wake up. Time to come out of fairly tale... just to realize that you are about to enter another.

I have one question, when will it stop ? Fairy tales and castles ......

Schrödinger's cat

Yesterday I was watching one of my favorite serial, the 'Big Bang Theory' starring four geek guys, one of them Indian and a dumb hot blond. I will not advocate my choice here, but it taught me a lot of things. Things like Light Year is not a unit of distance but time (an honest confession that I too had the same perception), how to sell your sperms to make money, the string theory and its implications on humans, no more than 26 dimensions exists in a physical universe and so on.....

But the most interesting was the 'Schrodinger's Cat' theory, which in plain english means that if you put a cat in a box with poison, the cat can be assumed alive as well dead, the final outcome can only be proved by opening the box. It is explanation for the 'Copenhagen interpretation'.

The thing that amuses me a lot is the close relevance of physics and human nature, I have always tried to apply rules of physics to human behavior and study its implications. We often times think a lot and waste our time in finding out the outcome of an event instead of taking appropriate action. Its like calculating your moves in advance to defeat destiny, which in my opinion is an impossible task. Schrodinger's cat tells us precisely that, do not wast your time in thinking too much about the outcome take appropriate action. I remember that Lord Krishna said 'Don't  worry about the result, keep on doing your duty', please don't quote me on this but this was approximately what he said.

Also it is good to have 'Schrodinger's cat' theory in your arsenal, at-least its makes you look smart ass.

Auf Wiedersehen !

Irony: Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs

It was just other word I used to throw at people, a wise guy sort of word. But I have started to realize that Irony is not just a figure of speech or a word used to describe your power of comparison to others; but for me irony has become my reality.

In my previous blog I signed off on a note that we are happy in our ignorance. We tend to cherish our past, ignore the present and worry about future. I was impressed by the movie Kung Fu Panda – not the animation part of it but the kind of approach it took towards life. We all have it in us but we seek it in others. What an irony!

Following are examples of how ironic life has been to me.
When I was in India I longed to go abroad to see places to see how people are on the other side of the world, catch the setting sun in ‘The west’ ! And here I am in Mid-West longing to go home and to catch the 'Rising sun' in my hometown ! Burgers and Pizzas had always lured me, but never did Puran Poli, chat or Vada Pav they were integral part of my life, say for e.g. air you breath, you always take it for granted till one day you run out of it !!.

Grass is always greener on the other side! When I was working I wanted to go to school and when in school I was tired of student life. I wanted to do real job. And now when I am doing a real job, I want to go back to school!

Yesterday when I was walking down the streets of Olathe – a small town in Kansas, I saw lush green fields waving with the wind, there were unbroken fences, properly maintained wild grass, sidewalks beautifully carved with curbs for pedestrians, fields with no ‘Trespassers will be prosecuted’ signs or barbed wired fences. It was a treat for my eyes. I was thinking to myself these people are so lucky to enjoy such a wonderful natural wealth, back home the scene is opposite. But as I was thinking; it occurred to me that to appreciate this beauty you need to be from a place which lacks it! and then I said to myself how fortunate I was. An American is less likely to appreciate it as he takes these things for granted. He might find something else attractive which I might take for granted!

In my opinion it explains why the grass is ‘ought’ to be greener on other side. Our civilization would come to a standstill if we thought ‘My grass is greener than yours!’ and people stayed in theirs homeland admiring it.

Same word different perspective - ‘Irony’.

Life never stops surprising you and may be that’s what I like about life always new challenges new ways to explore. I know I might get tired one day but then at-least while breathing my last breath I would be glad that I could appreciate what I was given, even my last breath !

C07 Batch Portfolio

Some people and places are not forgotten ....
Same thing is true about my TCS ILP batch. We were a bunch of randomly chosen 'gifted' people from all parts of India brought together at Coimbatore (the less gifted were sent to Trivendrum !!), off-course we had to clear the physically grueling selection procedure by TCS !!

During my stay at Coimbatore I made lots of friends, many of them for life time. Apart from the extremely hectic schedule that TCS put us through for 47 days we enjoyed the weekends and the lab sessions which were purposefully scheduled at dawn or midnight.

Monu, one of my greatest friend and philosopher took pains to put the following portfolio together about C07 batch, one of the eight other batches.

There is a retired teacher leading a quiet and peaceful life. On each birthday his friends, relatives and especially old students come to visit him who include VIPs like K.J.Yesudas etcetera. The full day consists of such visits but he has reserved the evenings for a special routine that has continued for years. The time reserved for this is not used for anything else, not even to meet relatives who are late. He retires into his room, starts reading and laughs uncontrollably for hours. His family members have got used to this but an outsider may wonder what caused this quiet old man to giggle and laughs like a teenager. The cause of his happiness is the comments, incidents and short messages written by his friends about him during his student days. It is as if he has traveled back in time to those wonder years and can see his entire student life pass by once again. That person is my college friend Dileep’s Grandpa. Since I wanted all of us to enjoy our life as DJ’s Grandpa, I decided to pen some things.

Wishing you all a hilarious 75th birthday-Monu Abraham Joy

JUST BECAUSE SOME ADJECTIVES HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO ONE PERSON DOES NOT IMPLY THAT OTHERS DO NOT HAVE SIMILAR QUALITIES.

19. NOOPUR ( CRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrr…)

• Like Shaji did the thankless job of a CR where you get bad vibes from both sides (staff and          associates).
• A person in the group who spoke her mind if my ideas were haywire. So obviously we did not     jell well.
• The Noopur I saw in the 1st 2 weeks of ILP was very different. As I pride myself in being able      to categories associates, she was a puzzle.
• I learnt to stop giving always-negative comments to people, from my project team                       experiences. I learnt that it is not necessary to cut, negate, or object vehemently someone who   thinks you are wrong, even when they are right and vice-versa. I do not deny that noops gave a   lot of practice. Ha ha.
• Jokes apart, she was very nice to get along with in the end. Hope no hard feelings are left           behind…
• Seen mostly with Chandana n sruthi.

20. SANJANA

• Had a strong Kannur accent and colloquial usage of words, when she came, that all liked her       at once.

• I have heard that she has a peculiar way of implying “Mach Nicsht”.

21.CHANDANA
• Introduced us to the sweet world of Bengolee Music .
• Good singer.
• Had trouble with the gender usage in Hindi, which was cute.
• Html person of her team.
• Arogya calls her by “Tante”

22.LEKSHMI

• Always bubbling with energy.
• Addicted to mobile usage inside lab.
• Seen around Pallav Kumar, ensuring he and Rohin do their work.

• Easy to talk to, down to earth person.
• Got tickets back to Trivandrum for a lazy fellow like me.

Last but not the least by any means…

24.DIVYA (Da)

• The only female associate I dare give a nickname.
• Because of strict “eating schedules” she always ensured that we weren’t wasting any time            during Project “discussions”.
• Even when she had to go she ensured that she did double the work that was expected from          her.
• She and Noopur did most of the drawing work. So thanks a lot !
• Uses “ You know what” phrase a lot .
• Feared that she would end up in Coimbatore. A fact that was well utilized by Arogya and             Dileep.

Algorithm of my life

Sandeep's log start date 04/21/08 .......

Like all intelligent people on this planet, I too like to blog (I rather call it logging than blogging).

We all browse through profiles of friends and strangers on social networking sites like Facebook and Orkut. We read about their perception of life, we think a while and browse away ! somewhere deep inside we all have our own perception of life. Some say life is defined by what choices you make, frankly I too believed it for a while (I always thought I took the red pill from Matrix .. )  but then your choices are cumulation of your parents, relatives and friends choices too, wont they influence your choice ! some say life is a ocean, length can be measured not the depth ! there are so many opinions so many philosophies. One that really satisfies my curiosity (at-least for the time being ) was stated by Steve Jobs. During his speech at Stanford he said that choices do affect your life and it all makes sense when you look back, he reasons it by saying you cannot connect dots looking forward, looking backward it makes perfect sense !
keep on doing what you love to do and you will reach the goal.

I will try not to impose my idea or philosophies, frankly I don't have any ! Everyone is a philosopher everyone has his own ideas about life, I respect individual opinions but then sometimes I cant help thinking about what makes people believe that life is governed by only one rule. Daily I formulate a new rule try to apply laws of physics to abstract ideas. My mind has become like a parser, it tries to apply rules to every action and predict reaction. I know I sound confused but I am looking for answers, to questions which may sound irrational.

I wake up in morning with a timetable in my head filled with to-do list and alarm bells, life has become a program which runs on itself and I unconsciously follow its instructions. When I was a kid, I remember I used to wake up with a wish-list in my head, I always used to have a wish, to go places, to do things. And look at me me now, I have to-do lists which are eternal. It seems life is tied to the hands of clock, I no more listen to my heart beats but to the ticks of clock. For every second that passes I feel I lost a second in my life. Every morning when I look into the mirror I have a question myself, what if today was the last day in my life, would I want to do what I do today, and if answer came no for several days I know something is wrong with me (Again the inspiration is Steve Jobs, Stay Hungry Stay Foolish).

The days just go by, and everyday is just the same, go to office grab a Stabucks coffee run to class go to lab get my ass kicked by my advisor ! I come home tired, go to Rec-Center run 3 miles, come home cook food watch Seinfeld read some stuff and go to bed (trust me this is the only best part of the day !) So the question is why we run so much in life chasing a mirage, were we made for this !

I have no clue, no answers but only questions and more questions. When I was a kid my science teacher wanted me to ask questions, and now my professor wants me to ask the right questions ! I hope to find answers to them one day, but you know what, life is beautiful in ignorance. May be thats the reason why people like to take the 'blue pill' and live in 'The Matrix'.

Mithun da !!

Its high time that I stop thinking and start blogging about Mithun, unarguably Mithun da is the greatest icon in hindi movies. Once he said at the Filmfare awards that 'Amitabh Bacchan is a star till Dharavi, its my territory beyond Dharavi .. '  man you need balls of steel to say that.

My favorite South Park character, Chef

Hello There, children !

I wanted to write this blog since a while, today I got some spare time to write about my favorite South Park character - Chef.

Chef, his original name was (Chef is no more with us, he was killed in season ten by the producers of South Park) Jerome McElroy.
among children he was popular as Chef. He was voiced by Issac Hayes.

One thing I like about Chef was that he was the only adult in South Park who made sense and would help children (Eric, Stan, Kyle, Kenny) not only in adverse situations but also provide them with the most precious guidance !!

Most of the times his advices came from his songs which started normally but always used to lead to sex in one way or the another. He also happened to write a song "Stinky Britches" which was later covered by Alanis Morissette.

One of my favorite part was in the episode called "Cartman gets anal probe", in which Chef tries his best to save children from the Aliens. The main aim of Chef's life is to cook and have sex, plain simple human basic needs !

What most of us don't know is that his family lives in South Park his parents refer to each other as Thomas and Nelly.
I am still pissed on why the producers had to kill Chef. Some say there was some controversy between Hayes and the producers. Now South Park is not as good as before due to many reasons Killing Chef is one of them !

He always used to greet by saying "Hello there, children ! " even if there was only one child, these funny habits of his and many more will be missed.

I pray to god that may Chef Rest In Peace !

Adobe AIR

RUBIK

A very important chapter of my life was Rubik ! a desktop application that I created using Adobe AIR and Flex builder. I had lots and lots of good and bad experiences, and it was a fun project. Thanks to RJI and Adobe, I was able to get so much of exposure to Flex and action script.

Something about how I developed RUBIK:
Developing RUBIK was not a simple task, we had lots of brain storming sessions, I worked with Mi Li (Journalism student), You Li (Journalism Student) and Bandhana Katoch (MBA). Now I was the only developer caught among them and they used to throw random ideas at me, we were playing "What if's " for long time and then I came with an Idea of having an application which would rotate like a cube and it struck everyone, now the next big step was to give it a name ! it again took lots of time to think about what would be an appropriate name for the application ! Every-time any one of us used to come up with an idea it used to be disagreed by others, finally Bandhana got the name Rubik by consulting some of her random yankee friend ! and thats how RUBIK was named, like six facets of rubik cube we would have six different application running on each of its face !

So far so good ! but how were we going to achieve it. It was a big question. And being a developer I had to worry about designing and developing the app. Well, I was fired up and I knew I would take RUBIK to end. My team suggested we hire a developer and so we did but he wasn't useful as learning AS3 and FLEX involved a steep learning curve and time was the only luxury we didn't had ! We were given $5000 to spend for the project and we didn't spend much !

So the development for Rubik began somewhere in Nov. and I had 9 credit hours and two jobs, my life was all jumbled up, and to top it all I was to go to India coz else I would have been dead in this alien country (Technically my visa says I am Alien in America... screw you guys ) So I went to India in Dec for 50 days and as we know the internet there sucks big time I could not work on RUBIK, though I tried different things which I am glad worked.

After coming back it was all messed up, I had a week to make the application and DB was not in place and nothing was integrated I was still fiddling with UI. I did the SQL DB in one day and made the app a little bit better, well we delivered RUBIK just in time, so Indian !

I used help from online resources a lot especially google and also documentation provided by Adobe helped. Thanks to the online action script libraries and help I was able to make RUBIK reality !

It wouldnt be good for me to end this without a demo of RUBIK, please click following link to watch Demo (Thanks to blogger, for not allowing me to upload swf files)
